Ricardo Paul

I wanted to explore the 9:16 aspect ratio used for social media videos, so I introduced split screens to change visual interest and maximize the use of the frame. After colour correction, I applied a custom grade to achieve the desired look and mood. A storyboard of the sequence was shown to Ricardo to ensure his movements and desired shots were achieved.

Video individuality

Ricardo’s background as an ex-bodybuilder makes his back a standout feature, so showcasing a "back day" in the gym was a deliberate choice to highlight one of his strongest assets. The filming was designed to immerse the audience in the action, using close-ups and tracking shots to show the intensity of the heavyweights being lifted and moved by Ricardo. These dynamic shots help the viewers feel as though they are part of the movement.

In contrast, stationary shots were used to let Ricardo's athleticism and technique take centre stage. By focusing on his form and fluidity ( Seen on the rowing machine). These shots allowed the raw strength and his movements to shine.

The combination of tracking and stationary angles created a balanced and visual narrative, showcasing Ricardo's skills while drawing the audience into the energy of his workout.

Bright yellow fonts were created as an energetic font but also chosen to blend with the colour palette and warm lighting featured in the video.

One of my main aims for this video was to refine the pacing and flow of the shots. The movement in particular his footsteps helped maintain a consistent pace throughout. While editing, cutting to the beat of the track, created moments where the audience is made to wait for the next cut, ultimately slowing the flow. Therefore, cutting to his movements in post worked well with pacing.
